The Parksdale House, Northampton County, NC

Taken last Wednesday August 6, 2025 in the rain.

The Parksdale House in Rich Square, North Carolina, is a striking Greek Revival home built around 1857. Set on a two-acre lot in the heart of town, it features wide-plank heart pine floors, five fireplaces, and spacious rooms filled with natural light from its many windows. Though time has taken its toll, the house still holds onto much of its original charm—period hardware, hand-carved trim, and a quiet elegance that speaks to its history. Rich Square itself is steeped in heritage, known for its Quaker roots and agricultural past, and is just a short drive from places like Sylvan Heights Bird Park and the Brady C. Jefcoat Museum of Americana.

Fall of 2024

Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of meeting the husband-and-wife team behind the restoration of the John Brown House in Halifax, who are now turning their attention to this next incredible project—the Parksdale House. I brought my son along, and despite the pouring rain, he quickly joined their son, Brax, in turning the old house into their playground, filling the quiet space with laughter as they played tag and hide-and-seek among the empty rooms.

The top of the stairs and door to the second story porch.

While the boys explored, I followed the couple through the home, listening as they shared their stories and vision for its future. Even though they were only in town for a few days to meet with a protentional contractor, they welcomed me in with such warmth and kindness, as if we’d known each other for years.

They kindly invited me to return and follow the restoration process in the months and years ahead, and I’m excited to share the progress as their vision comes to life.
